What Is Spiritual Direction — And Do You Need It?
February 14, 2026
Spiritual direction is one of the oldest and most misunderstood practices in the world of soul care. Here's what it actually is, and how to know if it's right for you.
Spiritual direction has been practiced for thousands of years across traditions — from the desert mothers and fathers of early Christianity to the teachers and disciples of Sufism, Buddhism, and Indigenous wisdom ways. Yet for many people today, it remains mysterious or even inaccessible.
At its heart, spiritual direction is a sacred conversation. It is not therapy, though it can be deeply healing. It is not coaching, though it can offer clarity and direction. It is not religious instruction, though it engages with the deepest questions of faith. It is, simply, a practice of attentive listening — one person accompanying another in paying attention to the movements of the Spirit in daily life.
What Happens in a Session?
In a typical spiritual direction session, the directee (the person receiving direction) is invited to share what has been alive in their inner life — experiences of prayer, moments of consolation or desolation, questions arising from daily events, dreams, longings, and doubts. The spiritual director listens not only to the words but to what lies beneath them, and through gentle questions and reflection, helps the directee notice where the Sacred is at work.
My role as your spiritual director is not to tell you what to believe or what to do, but to help you hear your own deepest wisdom and the voice of the Divine within your own experience.
Signs Spiritual Direction Might Be Right for You
- You feel spiritually stuck, dry, or disconnected from a practice that once felt alive - You are navigating a major life transition and want spiritual accompaniment - You have questions about faith, belief, or your relationship with God/Spirit/Universe that you haven't been able to explore fully - You want to deepen your prayer or contemplative practice - You sense a call or longing that you haven't been able to name or follow - You have experienced spiritual trauma and need a safe space to process it
Spiritual direction is not only for religious people or those with a formal faith tradition. I work with people who identify as spiritual-but-not-religious, those exploring multiple traditions, and those who are simply drawn to the questions without knowing where they belong.
Taking the First Step
The most important thing I can tell you about beginning spiritual direction is this: if you feel drawn to it, that draw itself is worth paying attention to. Trust your longing. It knows something.
