Five Signs You May Be in a Spiritual Awakening
December 15, 2025
Spiritual awakenings can be disorienting and even painful. Recognizing the signs can help you navigate the process with more grace.
Spiritual awakening sounds beautiful in theory — and it can be. But it also frequently involves disorientation, loss, dissolution, and a profound sense that the life you knew no longer fits. If you're in the middle of one, it can feel more like a breakdown than a breakthrough.
Here are five signs that what you're experiencing may be a spiritual awakening — and some thoughts on navigating each one.
1. The Life That Fit Before No Longer Fits
Things that used to satisfy — your job, your relationships, your routines, your worldview — feel suddenly hollow or constrictive. This isn't necessarily depression (though it can look like it). It is often the beginning of the soul demanding more authentic expression.
Navigation: Resist the immediate urge to fix or change everything. Sit with the discomfort and let it show you what it needs to show you before acting.
2. Your Relationship to Time and Reality Shifts
Many people in spiritual awakening report experiences of time slowing or expanding, a sense of heightened presence, unusual synchronicities, or vivid dreams. Reality feels less fixed than it once did.
Navigation: Grounding practices become essential — time in nature, physical movement, nourishing food, regular sleep. Your energy body is recalibrating.
3. Old Relationships and Friendships Change
Some relationships deepen; others fall away. The conversations and connections that used to feel sustaining may feel hollow, while you find yourself drawn to people and communities you never expected.
Navigation: This can be painful. Allow it to happen with as much gentleness as possible, both toward yourself and those who are falling away.
4. You Become Increasingly Sensitive
To energy, to other people's emotions, to beauty, to suffering in the world. Emotional and sensory sensitivity often increases during awakening.
Navigation: Learn to protect and manage your energy. Boundaries, ritual, and regular spiritual practice become protective structures during this time.
5. You Are Being Drawn Toward Something
A call, a longing, a question that won't leave you alone. Something in you knows there is more — more depth, more meaning, more authentic expression — even if you can't yet name what it is.
Navigation: Follow the draw. Not recklessly, but attentively. Consider working with a spiritual director who can help you discern and navigate what is emerging.
Spiritual awakenings are among the most significant passages a human being can make. You don't have to navigate them alone.
